Atlanta Prosperity CampaignDid you know that households earning $42,000 or less in 2008 can have their taxes prepared for free at Volunteer Income Assistance (VITA) Sites at 45+ locations throughout metro Atlanta? Many families may also qualify for refunds through the Earned Income Tax Credit. The Atlanta Prosperity Campaign, an initiative of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, seeks to broaden wealth and reduce economic inequalities for working families in Metro Atlanta. We accomplish this by connecting low-income to moderate-income working families with existing economic benefits available to them.
Plant a Row for the HungryIf you have a home garden or are planning one this year, consider participating in the Plant a Row for the Hungry program. It's a great way to donate your extra produce and provide nutritious food for people in need. Plant a Row for the Hungry is a joint effort of the Atlanta Community Food Bank's Community Gardens Project and the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Last year, Plant a Row for the Hungry yielded more than 40,000 pounds of produce from local gardeners who literally planted an extra row to donate to Food Bank partner agencies. Plant a Row for the Hungry was launched nationally in 1995 by the Garden Writers Association of America.
Hunger 101As one of the key educational components of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Hunger 101 strives to increase awareness about hunger and poverty on local and national levels through workshops, online curricula and other creative tools designed for a variety of age groups. This arm of the Food Bank plays an integral role in carrying out our mission: to fight hunger by engaging, educating and empowering our community.
Hunger Walk/RunHunger Walk/Run is not only a huge annual fundraiser for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, but it is also one of our community building projects as it aims to unite Atlantans of all ages and walks of life. Each spring, thousands of participants come together to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of hunger and poverty relief. The Food Bank and five other local organizations with hunger relief programs benefit from this event each year. Whether you participate on your own or with a group; in the 5K walk or certified 10K run, youâ??ll enjoy the looping route through our cityâ??s historic downtown. This family-friendly event has a true festival atmosphere with games, food and live music.
Kids In NeedKids In Need is a project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank that provides brand new school supplies to reach children in low-income schools. As a year-round free store for teachers, Kids In Need aims to provide learning supplies for students whose academic success is threatened by poverty. There's no limit to what a child can learn when equipped with the right school supplies and a full stomach.
Product Rescue CenterThe Atlanta Community Food Bank's Product Rescue Center (PRC) is one of the largest volunteer operations in metro Atlanta. The PRC receives food from food drives and salvaged grocery items to be inspected and packaged by volunteers for distribution to more than 800 nonprofit partner agencies. This is a great activity for families, groups and individuals ages 8 and up.
Atlanta's TableAtlanta's Table is a project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank that rescues prepared food from our local hospitality industry and delivers the food daily in temperature controlled trucks to more than 40 metro Atlanta nonprofit partners. Restaurants, caterers, corporate dining rooms, hotels, convention centers, special events and other food service providers are among the more than 200 hospitality industry donors that regularly contribute prepared food.
Community GardensThe Community Gardens project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank assists in the operation of more than 150 community food gardens in the metro area. Community Gardening stimulates social interaction, encourages self-reliance, beautifies neighborhoods and produces nutritious foods, while reducing family food budgets. Each garden is an autonomous neighborhood-based effort where friends share work and responsibility. The Atlanta Community Food Bank provides gardening expertise, volunteer help, tools, seeds and more.
Flood Relief Food DonationsThe Atlanta Community Food Bank is currently accepting non-perishable food donations for special flood relief distributions for our partner agencies in areas hit hardest by the floods. We are also working closely with a coalition of disaster relief groups to coordinate efforts addressing immediate and long-term needs. Non-perishable food donations may be delivered to our main facility at 732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. N.W.
Product Rescue CenterFriday, February 13, 2009 - Monday, January 03, 2011Atlanta Community Food Bank's Product Rescue Center needs 1,000 volunteers each month to help inspect, sort and pack assorted donations of non-perishable food, paper goods, medicines and cleaning products for distribution. This project offers a sociable atmosphere and is a great team-building experience for corporate or other groups and individuals. Ages 8 and up. Sessions are available Tues, Weds, Thurs, and Sat (9 a.m. - Noon); Weds, Thurs, and Sat (1 p.m. - 4 p.m.); and Tues, Wed, and Thurs (6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.).
Community GardensFriday, February 13, 2009 - Monday, January 03, 2011Spring is in the air, and the Atlanta Community Food Bank's Community Gardens project needs you! Participate in planting, mulching, weeding and harvesting vegetable gardens that beautify neighborhoods and reduce family food budgets. This is a great project for groups of 5-25 volunteers. Ages 10 and up. Monday thru Saturday, three hour shifts.
Atlanta Prosperity CampaignFriday, February 13, 2009 - Friday, January 08, 2010You can make a big difference in the lives of people who are working hard to make ends meet. The Atlanta Prosperity Campaign, an initiative of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, needs volunteers to help screen working families for public benefits (such as food stamps, subsidized child care, Peach Care, etc.). Help us ensure everyone has access to all these economic supports to which they are eligible! Volunteers should be at least 21 years of age, have basic computer/internet skills and be willing to work one or more three hour shifts. Fliexible shifts available Mondays - Saturdays.
Kids In NeedFriday, February 13, 2009 - Monday, January 03, 2011Volunteers are need for Kids in Need, a project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, that provides free school supplies to teachers in low-income schools. Assist teachers as they choose school supplies in the afternoons or help with a wide array of sorting and restocking projects in the mornings. This is ideal for individuals or small groups. Ages 16 and up. Afternoon shopping assistants are asked to commit to a 4 hour shift either once a week or once every two weeks for one or more semesters. There are two semesters each year, August - December and January - May. (Volunteers can start at any point during the school year.) Shopping Assistant Shifts run Mondays thru Thursdays, 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Shifts for morning volunteer groups of 1-15 people run Mondays thru Fridays, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.
School Supplies for Kids In Need Kids In Need, a project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, provides brand new free school supplies for teachers in low-income schools. We can never have too many of the following items: Pencils, erasers, crayons, spiral notebooks, paints and rulers. Thank you!
Gardening Tools for Community GardensCommunity Gardens is a project of the Atlanta Community Food Bank that helps cultivate bountiful gardens throughout the metro area. A variety of tools are needed to help staff and volunteers maintain each garden properly. Want an easy way to help?
