Intercultural Professional CollaborativeCulture Connect is launching the Intercultural Professional Collaborative (IPC), an initiative to build cultural competency among American, immigrant, and refugee professionals. The goals of the IPC are to enhance cultural competency skills and to build cross-cultural relationships between professionals of different cultural backgrounds. The participants will attend workshop that will enhance their cultural competency skills in the workplace. In addition, American professionals will be matched with immigrant/refugee professionals so both parties can share their knowledge and experience from their careers.
Go Betweener Mentoring ProgramIn the Go-Betweener Mentoring Program, we strive to match immigrant/refugee youth (ages 7-17) with adults who are immigrants or refugees themselves and who share the same language and cultural background as their mentee. This way, the mentor can truly relate to their young mentee, for they too have experienced the challenges of having to go between their home culture and American culture. The mentor can provide support and guidance to their mentee in a way that no one else could. Although their primary role is that of a trusted friend and positive role model, they can also help with school work, English skills, making goals, connecting their mentee (and sometimes his/her family) with resources in the community, and fostering positive self-esteem and self-confidence. The program involves an application process, and Culture Connect provides training for all participants. Each participant is required to commit to spending a minimum of 4 hours per month with each other for 1 year.
Advocacy and EducationCulture Connect's Advocacy and Education Program works to inform immigrants and refugees of their rights in the United States and Georgia. While the program is expanding, at this point it is primarily focused on language access rights. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Executive Order signed by President Clinton in 2000 both stipulate that any agency which receives federal funding is legally required to provide anyone of limited English proficiency with an interpreter free of charge and regardless of legal/citizenship status. Our advocates visit ESL classes in order to educate immigrants and refugees of this right. In addition we print and distribute \"I Speak\" cards: two sided bi-lingual cards the limited English proficiency(LEP) individuals can carry with them in case they need to communicate that they require and have a right to a qualified interpreter.
