Ocean Beach is a beautiful 3 mile stretch of coastline popular with local residents and visitors alike to enjoy a range of recreational activities. Due to its popularity, there is also an on-going need to clean and steward the area. Please come out, enjoy the beach, and help to preserve and protect this treasured destination. This is an on-going volunteer opportunity: 10 AM - Noon, every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month. No experience necessary. Training and tools are provided. Learn how to grow and care for the native plants in our nursery, as well as, help plant and maintain our restoration sites. Tennessee Valley Nursery (Golden Gate National Parks)Tuesday, May 12, 2009 - Tuesday, December 29, 2009Volunteer with the Tennessee Valley Native Plant Nursery and join our efforts to restore native habitat in the Golden Gate National Parks. The Tennessee Valley Nursery grows plants for over a dozen restoration sites in the park from Olema to the Marin Headlands. As a volunteer you will learn about our local native species and the importance of restoration ecology. Activities include invasive plant removal, outplanting (winter season only), transplanting seedlings, pruning, and seed collection. This is an on-going volunteer opportunity: 10 AM - Noon and 1 PM - 4 PM, Tuesdays. No experience necessary. Training, tools, snacks, and beverages will be provided. *Bring your own lunch if you're staying all day. Join the Site Stewardship Team (Golden Gate National Parks)Saturday, May 09, 2009 - Saturday, December 19, 2009The Site Stewardship Program works to restore habitat for threatened and endangered species on special restoration sites in Pacifica and the Marin Headlands. Learn about local ecology and natural history while improving habitat for the Mission blue butterfly, the San Francisco garter snake, the San Bruno elfin, and the California red-legged frog. Volunteer projects involve a combination of hands-on work and short natural history lessons. These critters need support, so come out and join us! This is an on-going volunteer opportunity: 10 AM - 1 PM, Saturdays. No experience necessary. Training, tools, snacks, and beverages will be provided. Alcatraz Historic Gardens (Golden Gate National Parks)Friday, May 08, 2009 - Wednesday, December 30, 2009Come volunteer and learn about the unique cultural and natural history of Alcatraz, while restoring the historic gardens of the island. Activities will include debris removal projects, mulching, and planting. Throughout the project, volunteers will be introduced to the stories of the gardens and have the opportunity to visit some areas not accessible to the public. As an added bonus, garden volunteers arrive on Alcatraz before other visitors, so you can experience the island during the most tranquil time of day. Registration and application required. Must be 18 or older. This is an on-going volunteer opportunity: 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM, Wednesdays and Fridays. Training, tools, and transportation to and from Alcatraz will be provided.
