The mission of Historic Oakland Foundation is to cultivate resources to assist the City of Atlanta in the preservation, restoration and beautification of Historic Oakland Cemetery and to promote it as a local cultural resource and as an historic site of national importance.

%newline%Oakland Cemetery was established in 1850 when city fathers purchased six acres to be a public burial ground for the fast growing town of Atlanta. It was designed as a rural garden cemetery growing to its current size of 48 acres by 1867.

%newline%Historic Oakland Foundation was founded in 1976, the same year Oakland cemetery was place on the National Register of Historic Places. Working with the City, the Foundation has done much to stabilize the cemetery and is undertaking a massive effort to restore Oakland for today's Atlantans, and preserve it for future generations. In order to complete the task of restoring Oakland to be again the treasure that it can be, the Foundation must raise approximately $15 million, and $10 million for an endowment to maintain Oakland into the future.

%newline%Historic Oakland Foundation provides the perfect volunteer opportunity for anyone interested in cemeteries, history, historic preservation, art, architecture, gardening. Oakland volunteers enjoy a like interest in sharing their time and talent to further the mission of the Foundation assisting in our Museum Shop and with Special Events and guiding our many week day and week end walking tours.
