Stepping Stones Dance ProgramStepping Stones is Moving in the Spirit’s largest and most diverse offering, providing 90 minute age-appropriate dance classes each week to students ages 3-18. Classes are held at our home theater, The Beam, and community sites throughout Atlanta. Stepping Stones dance classes provide participants with creative movement experiences that encourage positive behavior and leadership skills. Our highly dedicated teachers are trained to teach fundamental dance techniques while addressing core values of discipline, respect, commitment and responsibility. At the close of the program year, Stepping Stones students participate in an exciting year-end show with other Moving in the Spirit students. In preparing for this performance, students learn the importance of self-discipline, respect, teamwork, focus and motivation. Registration for Stepping Stones takes place every August.
Junior Company Dance ProgramThe Junior Company is Moving in the Spirit's intermediate level program, reaching 8-12 year old girls with ongoing dance and leadership training between September and June. Members of the Junior Company: • Meet 4 hours weekly to study modern, ballet and African dance • Learn problem-solving and positive coping skills • Address issues relevant to their lives through creative movement • Participate in developing choreography • Perform in local community venues, and on a 3-day performance tour to another city in the South Members of the Junior Company must complete an audition at the beginning of the program year, and sign “commitment contracts” outlining their goals and responsibilities. Junior Company members take part in monthly educational workshops, and are matched with mentors who serve as caring role models and provide our dancers with social and academic encouragement. Registration and an informal audition take place every August.
Men in Motion Dance ProgramDesigned to provide a place in which young men can learn values, build confidence, and participate in healthy activities, Men in Motion provides a comprehensive set of activities for young men ages 8-13. Men in Motion dancers: • Meet for 90 minutes weekly to study modern, hip-hop and African dance • Participate in monthly Life Skills Workshops • Are paired with Mentors who serve as caring adult role models • Take part in recreational and educational field trips Director Chris McCord, an alumnus of Moving in the Spirit, creates unique movement and choreography for the dancers, which they perform in their own special show during the program year. Registration and an informal audition take place every August.
Apprentice Corporation Dance ProgramThe Apprentice Corporation is an intensive, audition only training program that teaches dance technique, problem solving and critical thinking skills to youth ages 13-18. Apprentice Corporation teens receive 7 hours of weekly instruction in modern dance, ballet, and choreography, and dedicate their summer and spring breaks to the program. With more rigorous dance training, students develop and practice repertoire that they perform in local venues and on an annual national tour. The repertoire they rehearse and perform reflects relevant social issues, promotes diversity, and explores the teen’s unique voices. Apprentice Corporation dancers are encouraged to take advantage of leadership opportunities with Moving in the Spirit, including teaching positions and office internships. Additionally, Apprentice Corporation dancers receive monthly Life Skills workshops and are paired with mentors who serve as positive role models.
The Mentor Program The Mentor Program pairs Moving in the Spirit dancers with caring adult mentors who provide support, encouragement and exposure to new experiences. Moving in the Spirit mentors encourage students’ academic success, social development and understanding of the world around them. Mentors are carefully selected from adult volunteers within the community. Volunteers are rigorously screened and trained, then matched with youth ages 8-18 in the Apprentice Corporation, Junior Company and Men in Motion programs. Mentors commit to at least a one-year relationship, and interact with one Moving in the Spirit dancer through weekly phone calls, bimonthly activities, community service outings and school functions. They also participate in ongoing training workshops, to provide them with additional guidelines, skill sets and information on child development. Additionally, mentors serve as school liaisons and resources for job applications, interviewing skills, and college preparation.
MentorTuesday, August 26, 2008 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Are you looking to make a difference in a young person’s life, and change your own life at the same time? You can do just that by becoming a mentor through Moving in the Spirit’s Mentor Program. The Mentor Program pairs Moving in the Spirit dancers with caring adult role models who provide support, encouragement and exposure to new experiences. As a Moving in the Spirit mentor, you will develop a meaningful relationship with one Moving in the Spirit dancer while encouraging his or her academic success, social development and understanding of the world. Being a mentor is a truly rewarding experience. To receive more information on becoming a mentor, contact our Mentor Director at mentoring@movinginthespirit.org.
Holiday Volunteer Friday, December 04, 2009 - Saturday, December 05, 2009On Saturday, December 5, Moving in the Spirit will transform its home theater, The Beam, into a magical wonderland for the children and teens in our programs, complete with food, drinks, and photo opportunities with Santa. This event is incredibly meaningful for the students we serve. All year long, young people in our programs earn \"points\" for demonstrating commitment, focus, and reaching personal goals in class. The Holiday Store is their chance to redeem their hard-earned points, using them to \"buy\" gifts for their families and friends. For many students this year, The Holiday Store will be the only opportunity they have for finding gifts for their loved ones. You can make this magical day happen by: * Decorating and setting up the store (Dec 4) * Serving as a personal shopper for a younger dancer (Dec 5) * Wrapping gifts (Dec 5) * Dressing up as Santa (Dec 5) * Hosting a Toy Drive prior to the event. This is a festive and fun volunteer opportunity for individuals and groups. For more info, email volunteer@movinginthespirit.org
Holiday Gift DriveThe Holiday Store is Moving in the Spirit's much-loved annual bazaar for the children and teens in our programs. Throughout the year, students earn points in class when they work hard, meet their commitments and demonstrate core values. At the Holiday Store, each student uses his or her hard-earned points to \"purchase\" gifts for family members and loved ones. Moving in the Spirit will be accepting gift donations suitable for children, moms and dads through Wednesday, Dec 3rd.
