The Mentor Program pairs Moving in the Spirit dancers with caring adult mentors who provide support, encouragement and exposure to new experiences. Moving in the Spirit mentors encourage students’ academic success, social development and understanding of the world around them. Mentors are carefully selected from adult volunteers within the community. Volunteers are rigorously screened and trained, then matched with youth ages 8-18 in the Apprentice Corporation, Junior Company and Men in Motion programs. Mentors commit to at least a one-year relationship, and interact with one Moving in the Spirit dancer through weekly phone calls, bimonthly activities, community service outings and school functions. They also participate in ongoing training workshops, to provide them with additional guidelines, skill sets and information on child development. Additionally, mentors serve as school liaisons and resources for job applications, interviewing skills, and college preparation.(more)
