Volunteers are being sought to teach a variety of classes such as ballet, sewing, welding, photography, art, aerobics, etc. Volunteers must be able to commit to teaching a 4- to 6-week session and have some experience in class instruction. Scheduling is based on class interest, instructors and room availability.
Disaster Recovery Office Support Volunteers Needed!Thursday, June 11, 2009 - Thursday, December 31, 2009Stay Connected, a program of Neighborhood Centers Inc., provides a compassionate response in helping clients one-on-one to rebuild their lives following a disaster. Volunteers are needed to assist and support case managers who are working with thousands of clients rebuilding from Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike. Volunteers will call neighbors still needing assistance, scan documents, file and provide other administrative duties. Help Families File Tax Returns at Free Tax CentersFriday, January 01, 2010 - Friday, April 30, 2010During the 2009 tax season, our volunteers claimed $23 million in tax credits and refunds for 16,000+ families in our community. Their 5,000+ hours of service also saved those families more than $3 million in tax preparation fees. With your help, in 2010, we will prepare 21,000 returns and claim $25 million for our community. To reach this goal, we need 500 volunteers! If you are comfortable using a computer and working with numbers, we can train you to prepare simple tax returns. Set your own schedule! Commit to 36 hours between January and April - just 3 hours a week! We will have approximately 20 locations around Greater Houston this tax season.

City of Houston First Annual Citizenship WeekMayor Bill White and Houston community leaders showcase the vibrant mix of Houstonians during the First Annual Citizenship Week, as the City Celebrates the Many Faces of Houston. First Annual Citizenship Week focuses on the privileges, rights, responsibilities and obligations of all citizens from the native born to the adoptive Houstonians, i.e. transplants from other cities, immigrants, refugees, foreign students and international residents. Throughout the week many of the social and economic contributions and accomplishments made by our vast and diverse immigrant refugee population will be highlighted, promoting recognition of and respect of our diversity. Community events will showcase the many facets of being a Citizen of Houston. Entertainment will include musical performances from the Houston Grand Opera, an art exhibition by a diverse group of nationally and locally known Houston Artists, and a National Geographic exhibit of photos taken by Houston refugee photographers, many who will be present.
